So this is a great story! P.G Holyfield is a fan of the computer game NeverWinter Nights. I have a similar addiction to World of Warcraft and City of Heroes. The difference, Mr. Holyfield wrote a long and well-crafted serial story involving characters inspired by the game (and also by his long time love of fantasy). Due to a following for the story on the fan fiction site of NWN and a wonderfully timed interview by Bioware (the makers of the game) - Mr. Holyfield is poised to self-publish his serial story in novel form, restructured of course for novel format, but with an already-interested reader base. By the way, the original story is quite good and I expect the novel to be as well. You can read about it on Holyfield's site:Murder at Avedon Hill
Before you take off though, let's ask - "How did this happen?"
Well, on this site, we have talked before about finding a way to make your passion pay and live by what you love. Well, look at this...P.G Holyfield started this serial story as a labor of love for the genre and the characters. He had no intent to publish, then, a good while later, a measure of fame comes knocking. A wonderful story and what should be an inspiration to us all. Follow your passion first...worry about "market value" later.
Now, go read P.G.'s story.

My interest in writing was already there, but when I started writing fan fiction for the PC Game Heroes of Might and Magic, my interest became more of a passion. Fan fic is a great place to start.

I agree that fan fiction is a great way to start. I have more ideas from characters in games or that I have made up for RPG's than I have from just sitting around the house and cranking them out. As with Joel I have the addiction to World of Warcraft and City of Heroes and have came up with interesting stories using characters from both. I have even had a brief addiction to Never Winter Nights, as does Holyfield, but the characters I used for it were based on characters I used to RPG with what seems like ages ago. Whatever needs to be used for inspiration is good. We all have something different, whether it is movies, video games, roleplaying games, table top games or even books. Lets just get out there and be creative in whatever form we choose. As we all know we can never have to much literature or art (of any form).
